i am building an enclosure for my sub out of 3/4" mdf and would like to brace and seal it with fiberglass . i bought a kit for making fiberglass . it came with polyester resin , hardener , mat and some stuff for application . my question is do i need to use the mat or can i just use the resin and hardener . im just wondering what other people do when they use fiberglass for the inside of their box . i am trying to keep a certain amount of space inside the box and with the mat im afraid i might build it up too much . thanks for any help .

just resin and hardener will work fine, using mat will make the box stronger and not use up air space that matters, the freq response will change a bit.

Fiberglass on a wood box isnt nescessary... Its for making curves, not adding strength. Putting resin on the inside will probly help seal it and add a little strength, but not enough to make it worth it.... IF your concerned about strength, brace your box, or if your really concerned, make it double thick.

really ? i mean i know that fiberglass is mainly for custom installs and such , but i thought alot of spl competitors use this method to brace the box and make it stronger . i very well may be wrong , but i thought that was a good way to make the box stronger .

Im sure it will add strength.... But so will bracing the box, or just making it thicker... cost less too... Doesnt hurt to try it though...

if you are just trying to seal it, use the resin, but if you want the strength use the matt as well. that is wher all the strength comes from.it is easy to say just add bracing, but that would require more airspace, and a larger box, if you can not do that then the 1 or 2 layers of fiberglass on all your seams, is not going to take away a considerable amount of air space.

If you have a weak built box, then fiberglass and mat will not make it stronger. It's not an instant fix. However, if you have a solidly built box, then it does nothing but help. It fills all the seams and whatnot, also, makes the surface as smooth or as coarse as you want it. You can build in wave guides with it, which is a great help to SPL competitors. also, i would use mat on the inside of the box on the plane the rear wave of the speaker would hit first., and just the filler without the mat where it doesn't. But I would also double face the box, in not the whole box, at least the largest boards, or the plane the speaker is on.

Could you explain a little bit more about the wave guides for SPL? I'm very interested in that!
Thanks Chris
