i am gonna build a box for a L5 12" sub and i was wondering what the advantages and disadvantages to each sized box. the boxes will be tuned to Kicker specs.

I am kinda new but from what i understand as the box gets bigger you move more toward spl. i don't think it's a disadvantage one way or the other just what you like. smaller box SQ / the larger the box the more SPL. [Big Grin]

like hollywood said, its all about how you want it to sound. nice tight boomy sound or low drug out spl. evaluate what type of music you mostly listen to and what type of system you want to run, sq or spl, or maybe inbetween. its all about making compromises until you get a happy middle ground for what you want.

I built a 2.5 cube per side ported for my L7 12's and it gets LOUD and has amazing SQ as well. At a local meet a couple weeks ago we did a 148.5 our first time out. I'm considering building the larger sized box but I'm afraid that it'll be SPL only.

Hollywood has it backwards. With Kicker ported boxes the biggers sizes give the best combination of Spl and SQ. The smaller sizes give more of a spl boost. If your looking for the best possible sound go with the largest ported specs for the kicker sub you are using. Trust me. You won't be sorry.

P.S. If you don't beleive give the guys at kicker a call for yourself you'll thank me later(lol). [Big Grin]

Dr.SQ is right! I had some comp vr 15" subs and I built Kicker spec 5.00cf per sub enclousure and it hit way harder.
Build the the largest one they have.
