As long as you use a good adhesive and stick it with full contact to the metal, it should work as well or better.

Hey,
To get that stuff to fully contact with the metal, you might benifit from heating the rubber with a heat gun. I'm not sure what you'd use for adhesive, mabye something like a big bucket of Goop or Kool Seal. When you use that 1/4" stuff, there are obviously going to be crevaces that it can't reach, so you might want to use a viscio-dampening (sp?) compound to fill in the cracks, and at the same time it's an adhesive. It sounds like a great idea, i think i will look for it in KMart next time. Good Luck!

if 1/4 is too thick to bend into the crevises try 2 layers of say... 1/8 thick. that way the first layer will fill in better. as for adhesive, walmart has spray adhesive. works good for carpet.. real sticky $hit. =) i don't know how well it'll work for rubber though.
