i think i posted a question somewhere else thats similar to this, but can get a whole bunch of 3/4" particle board for free. its just as strong and heavy as MDF, it just crumbles if you soak it (not that i plan on it).. would i be able to use this to build a box out of?

Particle board is NOT as strong (nor is it as heavy if I recall) as MDF, but yes, you CAN make a box out of it. I see HUGE #'s of people with Particle Board boxes still, and don't seem to have any real problems. The thicker the better of course. If you feel you are having some problems with it, double it up. 1.5" thick walls would be pretty damn solid out of ANY material.

Hey, for free, I'D use it for something. We used to use it back in the day, but it's crap in comparison to MDF or HDF. It's still good enough for most stuff though. Just don't let it get wet, it'll fall apart with a quickness. heh

particle board is no where near as dense as MDF. it will resonant alot more. also if you plan on pushing alot of SPL through it, it will probably blowup, it is a very weak product.

its not the kind of particle board ur thinking of.. its the kind they use to build shelving out of.. like book shelves. the largest span this wood is going to be making is a little over 2', so there's little room for flexing. i could also line the interior walls with something to absorb any resonating. oh and. i put the longest piece supported on either side and jumped on it for a while. (it did'nt break) hehe..

If you can get a lot of it for free, maybe you could try some experimental box designs to see what works and what doesn't... maybe some compression horn designs or something. Just a thought.
