This will be my 1st project. I am glassing my rear deck my question is in order to get the shape is this what I need to do? Tape off the area ley some sort of polyester or fabric and glass over that first to form my mold then and the speaker rings and glass over that? Is that what I am supposed to do?

i suggest going to www.fiberglassforums.com
The guys there are really helpful..but don't just ask for help. If you spend some real time looking around and reading threads, everything can be found without asking.

if you can't do this part you should not try the rest your looking at a big mess, just trying to be real.
So your saying since im new to doing something not even try? That dont make sense, we all started somewhere.

I have someone that will teach me but Fosgate paid him big $$$ to build one of there cars his name is joe meraro I think thats how you spell his last name. Hes built Shaqs Impala, and a few other very high end show cars he is just to busy and lives kinda far away from me. I am sure you probably know who he is hes well known in the car audio world.

The problem I am having is starting the job like how to get the mold and stuff

You live in Plant City Florida?

I know for a fact there are a bunch of nice shops around you...go talk to some of them and tell them what you are planning on doing and see if some of them would be willing to help you for a fee

hydrosoundz, contrary to what others might tell you fiberglass is easy and can be self taught in a day. Your project does not sound all that complicated but your assumed order is adding extra steps, adn extra work.

From what you are describing, you will be glassing the rear deck twice when you really want to do it only once. If you have decided on the intended the placement of your speakers and have built the rings that you will use to mount them then all you need to do is temporarily mount the rings in the positions that you want them in and proceed with your fabric and resin.

If you have had a chance to read the fiberglass post you should be able to just follow the suggestions to a completed project, if you haveen't had a chance yet, you probably should. There are a lot of good construction tips in that post and also the post about creating a center console. Console

Later,

Mike

Wow, I guess at this point I am supposed to apoligize for getting some poor sap's hopes up....

Well since that's not going to happen let's just try to keep this civil and refrain from veiled challenges and use of the almighty exclamation point.

I still maintain that fiberglass is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be, but that's probably just my opinion.

I prefer to ry myself then pay I am not going to a shop to spend a ton of money for something I can try and possily succeed at. Thats like telling my 3 kids dont try to walk your gonna fall and hurt youself a few times so dont waste your time.

Quad Box were you born knowing how to fiberglass or did you learn from trial and error? Just wonering. I started off knowing nothing about this hobby now I can completely put together a car professionaly meaning running amps wires etc etc I just cant see my self spending hundreds possibly thousnds to s shop I know this because my friend Joe was paid 7000 dollars to fiberglass a guys car trunk, console, door panel, kick panels pretty much everytng and he only had6 g's in his system so the fiberglass cost more than his whole system.

But if you are willing to give me some positive feedback I welcome you to contribute to my thread

Hydrosoundz,
dont be scared, just get in there and do it...its not rocket science. but there are alot of differences in the steps taken between a proffesional and a do it yourselfer. you will learn how then you will prob understand why that shop charged so much for glass work. if you need more help and sudgestions you can email us at www.teamedgeaudio.com Scott Owens

Doing fiberglass work and doing fiberglass work that looks good are 2 different things. It's not hard to do...yeah. But depending on how you plan on finishing the piece can make the complexity go WAY up really quickly.
