I'm considering trying to do a dual alternator setup. My vehicle is a 93 grand cherokee with the v8. here's a picture of how it would have to be set up.
the one on the left (passenger side) is the factory location. the one on the right is the one that would need to somehow be mounted in place.
has anyone done this that has some pictures of how a second alternator was custom mounted? the ac compressor was removed to make this possible.

possibly find a fairly thick plate of steel to make a cut so you can attatch it to something solid and then bolt the alt to it (and then procede to align it with the other to get the belt around both)? Ofcourse youd need to find someone with a decent metal shop n such

you can do it yourself fairly easily with some 1/4'' steel plate (or thicker) to make it pretty i'd do a mock up with cardboard and take it to a machine shop and see if they could do it out of aluminum.
Basically start with cardboard, cutting shapes like you would to mock up a panel.
Looks like you can go from the bracket on the back of the stock alt, to the top hole of the new one.
Then i'm sure there is a place either on the frame, or engine mounts for you to bolt another brace, then go to the bottom bolt of the alt.

I'm not at all concerned about the belt being tight enough. this is how my pulley system works- in place of the alternator on the right, my ac compressor is supposed to be there. i re-routed my belt over a year ago to exclude that pulley. but if it were still in place, or if i put the second alternator in, the belt would go over the top of that alternator pulley, then almost directly down to a smooth pulley, then back up again to the factory location pulley.
i'm also not worried about how good this looks when its finished. if you didnt notice, my engine bay is dirty as hell, and its not going to get cleaned any time soon. i hit a deer last year, fixed the essential parts, and kept driving. the fender is smashed to hell, so even more reason to not care what anything looks like. to top it off, i dont have any interior panels. they rattled, so i ditched them so, long story short, steel plate will look great

i know you say you don't care about how they wrap over, but the more the belt wraps around the pully, the more true rpm at at the alt your getting...and alot less chance of slipping.
kind of like i did on my old truck

no sir. it goes from the top of the alternator on the right, almost directly strait down, around that pulley, then almost directly strait up, and to the top of the alternator on the left.

So how did you figure out where to put the extra wheel to make the belt tighter on the alts?
As in how did you figure how big to make it (the wheel), or how low to go with it or how far over (left-right)?
I would LOVE to have a dual alt setup, and you guys make it seem so easy. But it does not seem like an easy task. You guys make it seem like, you make a new bracket, and make space, and get a new belt and your done.. Oh I forgot the cardboard
