I am building new pods for my door panels. They will be used to hold and angle some 6.5"s and some 8"s I think. My question is, what is the best material to use for building the frame for these pods? I have seen most of the articles are using what looks like 1/4" or 1/2" MDF but that seems really heavy. Is that really the best material for the framing? Or is there something better I should be looking at getting? This will be the frame and then it will be covered and fiberglassed and then probably covered with a dark vinyl.

mdf is pretty easy to work with for this kind of stuff.

You want a very sturdy baffle, either 3/4 hdf or mdf, or 14 layer baltic birch plywood, 9 layer will work too. IMO HDF is your best bet when going strictly for function.
