I'm looking for a new air compressor. Basically, I need it to run a DA sander, air ratchet, air saw, etc---normal car audio stuff. I will be the only person on the line, and I am not a shop. Just me working on my vehicles.
I've been looking at about 60 gallon units--they seem to have the proper CFM's to run what I want. I have a 240V line for it.
Can anyone give me some name brands they have used that are reliable, and as important, any name brands to avoid? Also, any features that I should be looking for?

for personal use i'd say the 60gal might be overkill...but hell, if you've got the room & the 240v, by all means! You'll never have to stop what you're doing to wait for the tank to refill. that thing is going to be loud...
Might overload the circuits every now and then and lose the electricity if you're running, say, the dryer at the same time. But if you can get a designated circuit just for the compressor, you're be golden.
My craftsman has been used/abused by many people for > 8 years now without any problem. Couldn't tell ya what features to look for other than the ability to compress/store air...

My shop 240 is on its own circuit. The main fuse panel for my house is on the wall outside of my garage. So 3 feet of wire later inside my garage is a 240 plug.
I think I have settled on this:
Motor: 3 HP with thermal overload and manual reset - single phase motor Volts: 230 Volts PSI: 11.3 CFM @ 90 PSI; 10.3 CFM @ 135 PSI Max PSI: 135 PSI Tank Size: 60 gallon vertical Pump: Single stage splash lubricated belt driven pump Air Outlet: 3/8in. NPT 100% continuous duty Drain System: Manual Drain Start Up Kit: 15920083 sold separately Dimensions: 20in.L x 23in.W x 66in.H U.S.A. Model SS3L3

nice. if that 60 gallon aint enough, you can always find more tanks and add them inline with one-way pressure valves Posts: 8885 | From: over yonder | Registered: May 2001

Should provide plenty of capacity and looks like it should last you forever! Mine is a craftman (devilbiss) 30gal with 5.5hp(max) motor......it's good for most things, could use a little more capacity for things like angle grinder or large impact driver but it's quite sufficient, not constantly waiting for it to catch up, with the 60gal tank you should have no problem.
