Bigbarry:

I use a Porter cable 1/4" crown staple gun($119.00 Home Depot) and gallons of wood glue, for my box construction. BUT I usually don't build SPL monsters. Normially I build Street Bass enclosures.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't use anything thinner than 16 gauge nails. I use a porter cable, but anything that shoots at least a 1 3/4" 16awg nail should suffice.

Are they safe to use instead of screws for SPL boxes, or just for daily drivers? Thanks for all the feed back.

nails/ screws are only used to hold the joint together while the glue dries, if you used good glue the joint will dry harder then the actual mdf so yes its safe

You shoot a 2 1/2" long nail into 3/4" thick mdf? What stops the mdf from splitting? How close are you setting your nails?

I'm old school, I've always measured, predrilled, countersunk, and then glued and screwed all of my enclosures. I use either epoxy or an expanding poly glue "gorilla glue." I agree that the glue is what holds the box together, but the screws do provide clamping force until the glue sets.

Are you guys talking electric nail guns, or compressed air guns? I know a nail gun would make the whole building process lots quicker for me. I've always thought a nail didn't have nearly as much bite and holding strength as a screw.

actually it doesn't, when i use screws after nailing, it stil pulls it a little tighter, but i don't complain, i nail the damn things together, then come back and coutersink some screws into it, justto be on the safe side...

x2... ive literally built hundreds of boxes since i got my finish nailer 3+ years ago. like previously mentioned its the glue that gives the boxs its strength, not the fasteners.

ive never used my nailer for an spl application though, strictly screws.
