hmm... maybe a fibreglass dash, covered in that stuff? I dunno...
there has to be a good way to fit a 15inch screen in a dash... [Big Grin]

yeah, see, I was going to mount it lower... have the AC all controlled with the LCD touchscreen, and have no headunit...

it would be ALOT easier to find a car that already used motors and stuff to open and close the AC vents, and stuff... (such as some of the 180sx / 240sx have) but converting it would be possible... [Smile]

would be interesting, thats for sure [Smile]

two 6.5inch woofers in each door (plus tweeters).... two 8inch woofers for the centre channel/front sub (plus tweeter).... should be good....

alot of fibreglass... [Cool] should be good... [Big Grin] I just need some money... [Frown]

I don't think this pic shows it tooooo well.
 -

you're right, the screen is a tad high, but it flowed decently following the stock dash over the gauge cluster.

But a 15" screen can be done [Wink]

yeah, see, I was looking more to have it in the stock headunit location.. and angled.. so that it kinda molded into the centre consol as well [Smile]

I don't believe a fibre glass dash is legal... I guess a 15inch screen in the dash isn't legal either.. [Big Grin] hehe

can't say I'd really want a face full of fibreglass though...

I was thinking about getting the dash vacuum formed with vinyl... and claim the LCD was stock.. [Big Grin] oh.. wait... its a 1980's car I'm looking at using... [Roll Eyes]

I'm actually having trouble finding a 15inch touchscreen overlay here in Australia [Frown]

well the wheel is illegal but ive never heard of the dash illegal being fiberglass... myabe just if the bags were deleted.....
with the screen tho.. hell just hook up reverse camera to it while your driving.... that way its just like a rear view mirror... i dont think thats illegal...
i know im hooken up one on my truck [Wink] i think that iwll make my 8inch screen alittle more legal [Wink]
thats truly sweet fiberglassing tho! i just dont have the time to do all that sanding [Frown] LOL

theres a difference between what Meade did.. and what I would like to do....

full custom dash out of fibreglass... full custom door trims... 15inch screen in the dash....

I KNOW, that ANY screen used for anything but a reverse mirror is illegal... as is anything mounted on the dash above the height of the steering wheel... ALTHOUGH!!!

here in Australia... police cars are decked out with like 15inch touchscreen on swivel mounts, for the driver to use... and Taxis have character LCD screens mounted ontop of the dash... [Roll Eyes]

yeah, nothing like DOUBLE STANDARDS!!!

we also now have "anti hoon laws"

drag racing, burnouts, and LOUD MUSIC will all land you a $1200 fine... but... "LOUD" music, is at the police officers discression... so, you could have no troubles with one cop... next cop you come across... $1200 fine. [Roll Eyes] its SO STUPID!!!

and as if you class drag racing, in the same catagory as loud music... how is loud music HOONING!?!?!?

I mean, we installed a stereo in my mates dads car... he's 40... is him listening to his 1980's music "hooning"?? BAH!!!

ok, thats enough ranting.. heh

If you are trying to build a dash out of fiberglass (and not using the stock dash at all), I wouldn't really worry about this (unless you want to integrate the screen in the way Meade said he did not do it).

I have built portions of a full dash (it still is not complete). My advice---build as much of it as you can out of MDF. Get the skelton done as almost complete as you can with MDF, and then do the stretch fleece over it (like you see done with kick panels, and sub enclosures). Then add fiberglass (to the back side where you can, and on top where you can't). body filler, high fill primer, etc. etc.

I would HATE to drive the truck pictured above (with all the fiberglass). The dash is going to blind you when the sun hits it, and a chrome steering wheel----I can't imagine how bad that would burn to grab it after it sitting in the sun all day long.

gotta respect how much time that guys dash must have taken though cuz ill tell you what, just this little thing i did took HOURS of sanding, marking, sanding, looking at it with my thumb up like im painting a picture, then sanding, and more sanding.

Those shops that do this deserve all the money they get because it is so much work involved.

hey meade, does any judge say anything about the not so stock dash??

i dont think its illegal, but if it is and they call me on it i guess i find something better to do with my weekends [Wink]

I'm a bigger fan of a dash like this:

 -

Scott Buwalda's 240xs. That is functional, completely custom, serves a GREAT purpose (front mounted sub enclosure) and looks great in that vehicle.

hmm... looks pretty horrible to me...

the stock 240/180sx dash flows... its streamline... its smooth... then there is his lumpy, bulgy, BLUH!!!

wait... did you mean 240SX, or is it some other car? lol

yea, 240 sx. The bump on the left (with guages) motorizes down to be perfectly flat.

Also--that is a 12" subwoofer--up front--beautiful.

but I mean... compare it to the original 180sx dash.... it flows... it curves down to the gear stick.... a 12inch sub isn't going to convince me to have an ugly dash.. [Razz]

 -

this is the type of thing I like.. [Smile] and would like to do in a car sometime... maybe... lol similar...

I still like Scott's better.

Maybe part of it is, I have tried to build a complete custom dash and know just how much hard work goes into something like that. I also appreciate that the shape of that dash greatly effected his overall SQ scores, and know that a flat dash is MUCH better for SQ than some curvy dash (that is curvy on one side).

Meade in this pic did you just fill in the space between your dams and the OEM piece with the 2 part filler or did you add something in there to give it stability?? -

Thanks.
