what is easiest way to mock up the rear of the trunk for a face plate

huh? That is confusing, could you elaborate more. If you mean a trim pannel, the easiest way i have found is to build it out of mdf in three pieces attached to each other with carpet, that way you can drop in the middle piece, and the two outer pieces fold into place.

I use that white grafting card board you get at CVS. its something like 32" by 24" its usaully on sale 3 sheets for a dollar

i use cardboard. lots of it.

i put a piece in, measure as best as i can, and cut the piece. then fill in the gaps with other smaller pieces. all the while i tape it all together, each piece gets taped to the next.

when i get it exactly how i want it, i take the whole cardboard template out, and trace it onto mdf and cut it out.

remember to account for the thickness of the wood though

Measurments and a contour gauge, then I transer it to a template.
