been having a few problems with my mdf splitting on me and was just wondering any tips for preventing this that you guys use when building your boxes. i am predrilling holes, but was wondering if there is anything else i can do? thanks

kreg jig it from the inside then fill the holes with fiberglass or putty. or you could glue it together and just shoot finish nails into it. i wouldn't advise finish nailing it if your gonna put some serious knock in it though.

you need to use a larger drill bit on your holes that should take care of the problems

how far do u predrill the holes usually?

keep your screws at least 2" from the end of the wood your screwing into. You could also try a tapered drill bit (#6 I believe) set to the depth of your screw.

Drill the hole in the top board slightly bigger than the screw. Drill the hole in the bottom board as deep as the screw but a slight smaller diameter.

They have a drillbit that will do both drillings at once for only a few dollars. Get one to match your screws.


Also make sure it is MDF.
