I've been meaning to do this for a while, but I'm still not sure what the best way would be to go about doing it.
I want to make a cover like this to go over my subs:
But how do you get it to go to the edge perfectly like that? I was thinking of covering the entire trunk area, stretching some fleece over the box in the way I want it, then glassing it. To get the exact shape on the edges, I would just close the trunk so it would form to that shape. Obviously I would have to do this on a colder day with less hardener than usual, so I would have enough time to glass everything without it drying on me. Would that work? What other options do I have? I want it to fit as closely to perfect as possible.

your outside pamimeter will come from tucking your forming cloth into the weather stripping.. the straight edge in the front might be a peice of 3/4"and a 3 sub ring to bring the cloth back down to the top of the enclosure..

yea I am also interested in doing something like this, would just teh fleece be strong enough to bring out of the car then to work with or will it be too brittle, how much of the glassing would have to be done in the car? thanks -eric

I would put about 3 or 4 layers on and a coat of kitty hair, before removing it.To be sure it dont change shape while it sets up..."dont know if thats the correct way,but thats how I would do it...

So I guess I'm stuck with hours of sanding...I was hoping one thick layer of fleece would do it, to reduce the sanding, but it sounds like I should overlay the rest with mat after the initial layer has dried. I was hoping I could pull the mold out and lay additional layers of mat on the other side to reduce sanding.
Alright, thanks guys.

you could do your reenforcing on the rear of the mold, then there would be little sanding!

You have the right idea...Thats how you should do it, that way is actually better. But your fleece on the front is going to have all kinds of little bumps, and sometimes some overall inconsistensies that will need to be worked out with Bondo and sanding. Invest in a nice DA, its worth the $$.

Well, I got a bunch of sanders already, but its a big piece. It took me long enough to sand my center console for my 7 inch screen, I'm sure this will take a lot longer, especially since I'm probably going to have it painted with real car paint this time. I'm still not sure if I'm going to try to learn how and do it myself, or if I'm going to take it somewhere.
How hard is it to paint...like with real paint, not a rattle can? Gotta start somewhere, and I'm wondering if this is a good thing to try it on.

would making a box cover like this affect the sound much in the cabin of the car cuz this kinda seals off and air from going through the car doesnt it? thanks

Not sure what you mean. If your subs are already in a box, I don't see how it would make a difference. Maybe if you have a whole bunch of space that you would be sealing off, it may affect it, but I guess that just depends on your particular set up. I doubt it will make a difference in my car (the same kind as pictured above)
