I'm going to start building a new sub box for my 15W6 in a couple days and I'm planning on putting a plexi window in the top of the box. It'll probably be around 11x11 inches or so. how thick should the plexi be? This is for a SQ setup. I'm planning on making the sub enclosure around 1.4 cu ft. does anyone know how much the sub displaces?

you can count on about .15 displacement for the sub and the window should be at least .75 like the enclosure thickness.

What Danny said. I would use 3/4 inch plexi for that box. And .1 -.15 ft for sub volume.

great! thanks guys. any other advice in terms of handling the plexi and bolting it down? I was thinking of using nuts and bolts to hold it down w/ the holes siliconed to prevent leaks. The window will be siliconed to the box, too.

I would make sure to pre drill all the holes in the plexi and use a gasket material insteadb of silicone.

the silicone will not stick real well to the plexi.

Hmm. good thing you told me about that. I didn't know that silicon doesn't stick to plexi. thanks!

toolbox drawer liner, next to soft cork and neoprene is one of the best gasket materials I have found for window boxes.

I have a couple more questions. How far in should I drill the holes in the plexi? how much of the plexi should I have overlap w/ wood? Do I need washers or anything on top of the plexi to prevent it from cracking? any other plexi advice is appreciated

tip: put a piece of trim over the edge of the plexi and the wood. it hides all the screws and makes it look much nicer i think

You need to fully predrill the plexi. Also, the holes must be larger than the screw threads to avoid cracking.
If using wood or drywall countersinking screws, pick up a pack of trim rings to use with them (look like little metal donuts) so the flared heads don't crack the plexi.

Well, I got the sheet of plexi. 3/4" & w/ the window being 11"x11" and the holes 3/4" in from the window and in from the edge, the sheet comes out to be 14"x14". I had the shop drill the holes for me. 12 1/4" inch holes, 4 to a side. I'm going to use nuts and bolts to hold the window down, w/ washers and grommets I made by cutting some vinyl tubing.
I have a trim piece on top that makes the window appear flush and it extends over the bolts so they're hidden
I decided to spray paint the inside of the box silver. I sprayed over the dynamat and now it looks like dynamat makes a silver version of their original dynamat cuz the silkscreened logo is still visible I think I might spray some clear laquer over it so it looks a little smoother.

Well, I guess I got to start covering it w/ the vinyl. any advice on that?

Can vinyl be used as gasket material? I can't seem to find any longer bolts so I was wondering if I could just vinyl the surface that the plexi will be bolted on, and maybe use silicon under the vinyl so seal any leaks from the fabric backing. Would this work?

The vinyl will make an okay gasket but for the cost of a little weatherstripping foam I would go buy some from Home Depot...

Ok. I'll do that since I have weatherstripping too. Thanks for all the help!

FYI...
if anyone plans to use screws on plexiglass, i'd recommend using a "UNIBIT" available (also at home depot) but this will allow the flushmounting the screwheads

Just posted up some pictures of the finished box! Oy, it's kinda messy though... Looks better in person. I went w/ bolts w/ metal & rubber washers on top of the plexi, and metal and lock washers underneath. Silicon in bolt holes, weatherstripping and a little bit of silicon to seal the plexi to the box.

Well, pics are on cardomain, so just follow the link below. Thanks for the help everyone! It sounds great and I owe it to your guys' expertise!
