MDF is Medium Density Fiberboard. It's most common use is in cabinet making and shelves but it is great for car audio enthusiasts for a lot of reasons. It is very dense and heavy so it can be made into a rigid enclosure quite easily. It's also cheap relative to plywood. It's easily found in 1/2" and 3/4" thicknesses in full sheets that measure just an inch over 4'x8' and half sheets at most home improvement stores. If I missed anything post some follow up questions that are a bit more specific and I or someone else will be glad to help.
