if you used resin and mat it would make the box stronger and it woulf flex less making your drivers more effiecient. might make it a little louder. any change to a box will effect it acoustically. i dont see any advantage. unless you used 1/2 mdf when you should have used 3/4

It's been said to raise your db's by about .01-.03
if you care that much then resin it. Its not hard to do and it does make the box a stronger.

disregard that.

a layer of resin is about a strong as seran wrap. unless you add multiple layers, which is as strong as a saltine cracker. or unless youre talking about adding mat and resin. then you'll add som strength.

It'll actually strengthen it. The MDF will absorb some of the resin, which will strengthen it up a bit. It'll be similar to adding some thin metal to the wall of the box as far as strength goes. Atleast that is what I have seen in boxes with just a layer or two of resin on it.

You'd be better off installing a few full span braces internally. THAT would make a difference.

we have one rep that insists resin makes the box less porus, thus louder. i think thats false myself. as long as the seams arent leaking, the woofers themselves are much more porus than 3/4" mdf is, thus they weill leak the most air.

Well, you can use resin to weatherize/waterproof your box. A few good layers will improve box survival in inclement conditions.

There are several compounds you can incorporate into your resin that not only strengthen it, but also make it harder. These compounds are avalible from many sources including TAP Plastics. The TAP site has some interesting information regarding "fillers" and their pros and cons. A resin and filler combination thinned to the proper viscosity can be used to coat the inside of a box, pod or kick panel simply by pouring it in and rolling it around to insure an even coating. Thicknesses over to 1/3 inch per coat have been succesfully accomplished by your's truely. In my case, I used 1/2" chopped fiberglass(one of many additives avalible) added to an epoxy based resin (improved adhesion) this dramatically improved the strength with minimum work. I did 3 coats on the inside of my speaker pods after starting by covering the outside of my mold with 2 layers of glass fabric(it was still flexible). I can now park my car on the pods now with no problem. Very rigid. I then used the same technique to coat the inside with bondo(thinned with Stene Monomer rather than alcohol) Now the pods are over 1 inch thick. Should make a nice home for some Ti elites 6 1/2's driven by a PG Ti1000.2

resin by itself will not strengthen an enclosure anymore than sprayin paint would.. both are soaked into the mdf....

i understand the problem of MDF being porous, but with the prices of resin ( at a local hardware store) running upwards of $25 for a gallon, why spend that much just to "seal" the enclosure??

for under $8 a few cans of spray polyurethane can be bought at a hardware store, and seal the box just as good.

I've heard wood is porus as well, and I was told using polyuerathane or shellac would help. I noticed no difference when I did it to a box for an 8. I think getting into things that minor is a waste personally. It may make more of a differnce in a midrange enclosures, I've never tried or heard anything about that.
