If I was to make a mold, with which I would make several fiberglass shapes how would i go about that?

Will it stick to metals that are very smooth.

And what if I was to put some wax or some oil on the mold to make it release easier.

it will stick to everything you dont want it to stick to. it wont stick to petroleum based substances. it wont stick to wax based substances. just about everything else is a go.

Fiberglass won't stick to any smooth surface, no matter what it's made of.

Using mold release wax makes it easier to release, and using PVA mold release (polyvinyl alcohol, a liquid that dries to a thin film) makes it even easier yet.

Anything that's smooth and non-porous will release.. the smoother, the easier.

disregard that. its completely false. try dripping some on the hood of your car or your windshield. then you can tell us how much it costed you to have it removed cause it doesnt stick to any smooth surface, no matter what...right?

actually it wont stick to any smooth surface with a higher molecular density.

It will no tstick to duct tape. Also polyester resin will not stick to aluminum.

been there, done that.

You obviously have not had the personal experience to put book sense to test, otherwise you would know that an automotive finish or glass are two of the easiest surfaces to remove cured fiberglass resin from. In fact I use flat glass as a mold for sheet stock on a regular basis, with no mold release at all because I know the resin simply will not stick to it - it peels up rather easily.

Unless the resin chemically reacts with the material, or the material has been scored to provide more tooth for a mechanical bond, the resin just will not stick. Even in the case of a mechanical bond, it's always possible to wedge a sharp item between the two dissimilar materials and delaminate them. 15 years of composites experience tells me that!

15 years experiance ill take your word for it. either way, nobody would want resin on their car or their windshield and as for what resin sticks to, ill stick to the theory that if you dont want resin on it you better protect it. but if the smooth surface has a lower moleculer density then cured resin will stick.

You really don't want to mess with Mpipes. Even after being an exceptionally nice guy (as far as I have seen), he really knows his stuff. There is a great deal you could learn from him.\

Twellmann, Usually a substance called PVA is used for molds. It is liquid that sprays on extremely thin. But it peels off very easily and is water soluable. Here's a link to a place where you can get it at.

I agree MPipes has more knowledge than you would believe. You don't need to challenge every person on here trying to prove you know the most. I have seen it in nearly every thread you post.

thanks for the replies

I had an idea that it would have a hard time sticking to very smooth surfaces.

so if i used high polished steel as a mold I wouldnt need to use a release agent, and the glass on that side would be very smooth right?

Thanks for the props guys..

I think you may have owned yourself but you're redeemed because your pic makes Mickey look like the evil little rabies-infected rodent that he is!

Looks like he's casting a spell on that kid.

I can see it now..

A 40 year old is speaking with his therapist...

"Doc, I don't know why but I keep having these recurring nightmares of a guy in a mouse suit, knocking me to the ground then looming over me, with his arms ready to grab at my throat....."
