In a rectangularly vented enclosure would it hurt anything to carpet the walls of the vent? If so what else can be done so that it looks decent?

If you want your box to stay tuned the same, I wouldn't recommend it. You can just spray paint in there black before you carpet. Or you could take some time and line it with formica, or brushed aluminum, or something else flashy (but still smooth and hard).
