so, i'm sure many of you got the text this morning.. but for those that didn't i wanted to post up here, because most of you are like family..

As many of you know, back in 5th grade, Asia started playing violin in her school orchestra. She took to it pretty well, and showed a great interest, so we got her private lessons.

She then went to strings camp that summer, and has been taking private lessons ever since.

well, 3 years later, this year has been an amazing year.

Aside from the private lessons, and performing in her school orchestra, she took on some additional challenges this year as well.

She was one of only two kids selected from each school in northwest ohio, to form the Northwest Ohio District Honors Orchestra. 2 kids from each school were selected. they received thier music in the mail, and studied it for 3 months. Then they met for the first time, and had two 8 hour practice sessions/rehersals, and then performed a public concert at the stranahan theater (the same stage where the toledo symphony performs, as well as acts such as sammy hagar, kelly clarkson, etc..) that concert was also recorded by a sound studio and pressed on cd, with all the kids names listed in the credits.

3 weeks later she took on the challenge of competing in the district solo and ensemble competition.

she played a violin solo and she scored a 1. the best score you can possibly get, which is reserved for techinaly flawless performances.

she also took part in an ensemble with her and two friends forming a violin trio. they scored a 2. only losing a point place because they other two girls were dressed incorectly and had the wrong posture (which asia tried to warn them about)

she also had 3 different school concerts this year, and was the only one selected to perform a solo at the christmas concert.

this summer she is attending two different strings camps. the first was last week, and the other is next week. both are a week long, and end with a public concert.

anyway, with her success in the district honors orchestra, and her wonderful score at the solo and ensemble competition, it gave her the courage to go ahead and audition for the Toledo Junior Youth Orchestra.

The TJYO is the feeder group into the Toledo Youth Orchestra. It's comprised of 5th - 9th graders. and the TYO is coomprised of 9th to 12th graders. they both perform at the Toledo Museum of Art's Peristyle Theater. I believe the TJYO has 3-4 concerts each year.

kids are required to be part of thier school orchestra. required to take private lessons. required to be at practice every monday night through the school year. and required to maintain a minimum gpa at school.

Well, she had a private audition with the director back in may. and we were told we would simply receive a letter sometime this summer letting us know if she made it or not.

last week while in strings camp, one of the teachers there, is an assistant in the tjyo and told us that there were 30 violin seats available this year, and over 150 kids auditioned.

well, to sum it all up.... as i'm sure you've already guessed... she got her acceptance letter today. she made it into the orchestra. top 20% woohoo.

anyway, just wanted to share with you all that know her.

Congrats!
It's amazing how the things we accomplish in life pale in comparison to what our kids do.

i wanted to say thanks to everyone for your comments. asia will be here tommorrow to thank you as well.

this all started back in 5th grade when she wanted to join orchestra. her absolute only reason for joining was because her best friend was too, and they were both going to play the violin ...

here we are three years later. the other girl no longer plays, and asia is in the tjyo [Smile]

she just bought a new violin about a month ago as well. for three years she has been using a rental instrument, and we finally traded it in, and got her, her own, brand new violin. she loves it.

anyway, thanks agin, and she'll be on here friday.

i play as well. but not nearly at the caliber that asia does.

we started playign together and taking lessons together.

she has the advantage, that she takes orchestra at school, every day. and she practices every night. and she takes an hour private lesson weekly. and she has been to strings camp for 3 years.

i, on the other hand.... practice about once a month. and although we take weekly lessons.... i generally use that time to take a nap, and let asia take up my time, so she gets an extra long lesson. i probably actually take a lesson about once a month.. but i get 3 real good naps a month [Big Grin] lol

i play well enough that if i practice a song, regularly, we can do a duet.. but i'm not very good at sight reading.. i need to study the music and write in the fingerings. and i can play at the same level of difficulty that asia can.

but i do continue to at least, stay brushed up, so that i continue to encourage her.

i paid several thousand for my violin. it was handmade in germany by reinholdt schmidtt in 1898. my bow was handmade in italy in 1925. i paid a grand for the bow.

both are basically wasted in my hands... asia jokes all the time about how i spent so much on my violin and bow, and i dont even practice regularly...

she doesnt realize that i bought them as an investment for her, and that they will actually be her concert instruments for the tjyo, not to mention that as she gets odler and can have a nicer instrument, this will be given to her. i bought it for her, not for me. she just doesnt realize it yet. right now she uses a more modern lower priced instrument because it travels back and forth to school daily.
