I was thinking since I'm rebuilding my van...about changing from 4 18's to 8 12's, I know the pro would be more cone space but what would the cons be?

Cost? it will come down to cost. which setup will use more amps? and need more batteries. I would try to look at the big picture there is more to the system then just adding subs look at how each setup will affect the current setup that you have and where it can be improved on. and decide which one will have the the direction that you want to go with your system

well, first this is a drag only van, and I already have enough batts and amps for either setup. right now I'm using 4 18's, I was just wondering if more cone area would help my score a little bit. As for cost, that is not a problem.

I understand totally what your saying, but if you keep hitting a dead end, what are you suppose to do? I've changed so many things and still came out with the same problem. Right now I do have a few more things I'm going to try that was suggested to me via friends and team mates but now I'm just at that point of "Praying for the best and getting ready for the worst".

stick with what you have man. be patient. getting loud takes time. (i hope i can be loud some day) there are many variables with 4 subs, when you go to 8 subs there will be many more variables and youll be thousands of dollars poorer

Gavin you know more is not always better.....Maybe you should go to 2-18's. I know that I go against alot of setups with 4 subs with my two and I wind up being louder because of less standing wave....Just a thought. I did my first 160 with 2 15's and four amps. Maybe its time to consider different equipment?

KM: Anything is possible, maybe 2 subs would be the way but, I have to exhaust all my choices before rebuilding down to 2 subs, and as for changing equipment, out of the question. I stick with the people how have been with me from the start. I know for a fact the stuff I have has made records, so I don't doubt for a moment it's my equipment, I do know its my skills as a builder plus not having someone here physicially who know's what they are doing or to spot my mistakes or to advise me on how to make things easier only makes things harder but, I won't quit, sometimes you just need your friends to help guide you when you get off path and I think onece again, that's what happened. This year, I was given some more sensable and simple advice to try. Maybe these small changes will get me in the club.

Kraven is right! Do 2-18's and have less problems with time alignment. And have a better chance at being louder.

Gavin wasnt suggestin you jump ship, I respect loyalty to a product and team. Stand tall brother and best of luck remember Rome wasnt built in a day, just as spl cars arent. Can you post some pics of your enclosure? I havent seen it and I am sure alot of others havent either, you may get some suggestions that will help.

i think you would probably be louder eventually with 8 12s due to the added motor strength you have. however the tuning and all those recones involved in the tuning aspect of things is whats really going to kill you.
But in the meantime id stick with your 4 18s until you reach your goal and then after that you can revamp and go from there.
Why not stick with the same cone area and just change box designs? Try a bandpass for instance
