what the theory behind the use of the small box and big port? Are there any rules to follow when using this kind of box?

you've stated the rules already.
the only other ones are test, test and test
These boxes are all about SPL and high peak frequency - start a bit bigger than 'small' and work your way down. it's trial and error.
