Grinding sux and wire isn't cheap. Buy the big roll. I have a good idea how I want it to go, and so far its coming out the way I planned it in my head. I have a Vento (Jetta in the States) too, but mine wasn´t this extreme, I just had six 12" in wood boxes. Now let's see more of it...I did some welding myself yesterday on my new battery rack. The sides of your cage maybe not be fun...but just wait until you fo the roof.
