does anyone know whether the L7 12's like big enclosures or smaller ones for spl? which would be better 1.5-2.0 cubes per sub or 3.0-3.5 cubes per sub? Then about how much port area with each volume. Your help is very appreciated.

Thanks for playing.

Try around 1.5 per woofer unless you have a stupid huge area to work with and you want to play 50 Hz, then bump it up to like 2.0. They do like a bigger box in my truck, but that's the truck, not the woofers.

With 1.5 cubes how much port area should I run.Are these smaller enclosures going to like a higher frequency because right now my s-10 peaks at about 46hz my current setup which is about 3.25 cubes per sub with 64 sq in of port tuned to about 32hz. It only does about a 145 in the TL. I've got about 7.5 cubes to work with.

Shedluv, I apologize for not response back to you in time, however, that is interesting because I was under the impression--according to many posters from Sounddomain.com and several other forums--that L7 likes big enclosure for SPL in order to reach higher dB with crazy amount of power. I was also under the impression that there will be big of a difference between small and big enclosure in terms of dB and power. Back then, I studied a lot about what kind of box(es) L7 likes in general and the most common responses I got was they like big box (especially vented) with low bass and all that. If you disagree with this, then I would have assumed that what many posters from other forums told me and what I've learned thus far must be wrong.

Admittedly, I'm no expert when it comes to installation for stereo, however I'm in the process of installing (my friends will do that for me) four 12"L7 in vented box in my truck and it's bit smaller than my previous setup with only two 12"L7. To see what I mean, see the pictures below:

Previous setup:
 -

Currently setup:
 -
 -

Once I put the currently system in my truck, perhaps I will see the significance of power in currently system is vastly better and lower than my previous setup, major because of enclosure. Perhaps you may be right that the L7 does not need bigger enclosure to get some crazy power. But until then, I don't know what to say at the moment and I will have to wait and see how it goes.

Thanks for your time and, Gclark84, I do not mean to steal your thread, so forgive me. Good luck with your setup, man.

Everybody thinks L7's like enormous enclosures, however, they probably have 0 experience with them.

I see people recommending 8-10 cubes for a pair of 15's..... try 5-6 cubes. [Wink]

I would go 1.5-2, especially for spl on the 12's

for LOUD daily driving, a big enclosure is great. you can be damn efficient on the lows and still carry a good range. I've had several pairs from a few different years. all either customers subs, or old ones given to me as part of payment.
The expedition had four '06 12"s..we gave them each around 2.9cf and a big port. they loved it. around 2400rms total, did 148-149 with no damping or vehicle mods, at 37hz. -
but for competitions, a smaller box will probably get you better results. I run about 1.2 and 1.5cf with 1-2 4" aeros per 12", 57hz peak. i just need a lot more power for these boxes. great for a peak, lower the frequency, and the sound gets weak. If you wanna peak in the mid 40's, 1.6-2cf per 12" and 40-55si of port might be a good starting place

I was doing a 142 on the TL in a convertible with 1.2 per sub sealed with 1200 watts rms. Then I switch to an explorer with same sub and amp but ported 2.25 cf with 25 in of port per sub and was doing a 146 on the tl. Both still peaked in both rides in the mid 40's. I would say with 1200 watts or more a bigger enclosure. More watts smaller enclosure more port area.

From my experience I've noticed that the larger boxes work well with low power, but when you start to increase the power you gotta go smaller.
I've got something like 1.75cu per 10 right now, but I'm only running a single d3.
