I was thinking about mounting my subs inverted. Does anyone know if mounting them inverted (sealed box) have any effect on SPL?

Thank's Much,
Tim

I've never seen a drawback to mounting the
subs inverted or magnet's out in a box.
At least as far as spl is concerned.
In fact my next wall is going to be like
this. Just keep in mind that you adding
volume to the an already built box or
account for this in a to be built box.

What about if the box is ported, does it still have such a minor effect on spl. Does it hurt sq at all? I would like to do this in my next set-up, buy I haven't decided on the subs yet, and they could be for sealed or ported, depending on what impresses me in the near future.

When you invert the subs, don't you lose cone area?

Well on that losing cone area. Looking at and thinking of a sub I dont think you would BUT I could see that making a difference on the subs also.

If it is a normal cone sub with a "normal" dust cap then the rear radaiting area seems to be about the same. But on some subs the cone and dust cap are not the "normal." So from the rear the radaiting (spelling) isnt the same..or dont seem to be.

The front wave and the rear wave are the same! Therefore it will make no difference one way or the other. As for the phase, yes it is a good idea to invert the phase on inverted drivers. However, if all drivers are inverted then it wouldn't make a difference. The only time a problem would occur is when some drivers are inverted and some are not. Inverting drivers can be usefull when the enclosure is too small for the selected sub as not only the driver displacement is added to the enclosure but so is the cone area as well

PS - There is one downfall (exception to every rule ) If the selected driver has an offset on the coil, inverting the phase could cause it to bottom out

I have noticed a difference in the SQ of inverted subs, however, that may have been a function of box sizing more so than driver alignment.

STILL waiting to hear a GOOD pair of HLCD's!!

If it dont fit, force it... if it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway...
