All right.. I'm planning out my new system, the one I hope to put in my new car next year. This is all REAL preliminary, as I expect most of this to be changed by the time I actually buy the stuff.

I plan to do the whole install myself, yikes.

I've decided on 2 fifteen inch subs. One amp per sub.

They will be high excursion drivers, capable of high SPL.

They will have at least a mediocre sound quality. Given all the power they need, I expect them to play clean, low and loud.

They will operate in a PORTED box, of no more than EIGHT cubic feet per driver.

Now I haven't had a chance to get out and listen to most of the new subs that are around. Some people give me some opinions on the sound quality of the biggest name SPL drivers.

Juggernauts- That cone looks heavy, I would expect these things to be MUDDY.

DD - How many spiders? Can't be too compliant or have very good SQ on classical drums and cannon shots, can they?

Shockers- Don't have a clue. Never seen, never heard. Give me a brochure, website, pictures, testimonials, anything (except drooling and "Shockers rule".. Blah blah)

Eclipse 8815.6- The twelves kick a$$ in the Sound Q department, but are so inefficient that it hurts... Anybody experimented with a ported box for the 15? Sounds like a GOOD idea to me!

Earthquake Magma- I've heard the supernova home sub, and it was BEASTY- The magma 12 looks like a winner, but I think the E.Q. name has kept them down.. Any experiences?

Hey, question of rules- Do passive radiators count as subs?

Power DVC - Trying to wean myself away from rockford, not too impressed with the price on these overgrown punch dvc's... Anybody find them to be worth it?

Any other suggestions? Ideas? Sub info?

Post it here!

How about Ground Zero Nuclears? I have a Nuclear 12 and it sounds great and gets extremely loud.

I still like the Orion HCCA subs. Need a perfect box. The subs are REAL picky about that and Orion suggests a HCCA amp...BECAUSE of the subsonic xover ability on them. But They sould VERY VERY nice and play quite low. Box is the key here....

American bass makes a sub that has 2.8 inches of excursion sounds great and kicks major a$$ in spl competition. If you want some information on the woofer I am a dealer of American Bass and I could email you some.

Shocker by Atomic Thunder: 1db louder than the CV Stroker. 2db louder than the DD. 4.25 cu ft box vented. 300wrms per coil, 1200 watts peak total. Dual spider, paper cone (for now), cast basket. Very smooth response between 40-70hz. low impedance perfect for those d-class amps.

E-mail me for more info.

Oh yeah, $300.00 each, now how about that???

Well after doing some more looking at subs. Take a look at the Audiobahn subs. They are not $$ compared to the rest and do pretty damn good...

My friend has two shockers in his CRX. He does very well with them in competition but he says that they are not designed to sound good and especially don't play low at all. If you were going to buy and aftershock sub I would suggest the db's they do awesome in competition and also sound great.

I'm pretty sure that the db gain is because the shockers were in "thier optimum" box. but the other subs were not .

just my opinion thats all

The 1 on 1 test was done in a 4.25 cu ft box. The same box that both CV and DD recommend for their subs.

On a brighter note, the sound quality of the shocker can be good. It just depends on the enclosure that you put it in! They do not work well in sealed enclosures but if you use 4.25 and tune it to say 35 or 40hz they sound awesome! On the other hand, if you tune it to say 50 or 60 hz the sound quality isn't there (obviously) but they play VERY loud!!!!!

I have experimented alot with what every one always tells me is to big of a box. I have had good luck when it comes to spl though. I always used 12's and still got tight enough transient responses to satisfy me. I always choose speakers with a low Qes just for that though. I hav never tried 8.0ft^3 though. I think that will work very efficiently for spl. If you go with heavy cones and spiders like dd I agree with you that the bass will be muddy on the drums. I would look for a 15 with a higher vas and lighter cone if you have that much air space. The efficiency is much higher. I have to rockford dvc punch 15's @4.0ft^3 each tuned at 40hz. tose things can handle what they are rated no problem, but drums sond weak and muddy on them. I think a smaller box would help me, but I will probably just get 4-12's.You might concider spending a little extra and going with 4-15's @4.0ft^3 with four big amps. also, a little trick for more spl, put a baffle in the box behind the speaker and then have the port go all the way through it. Make the air in the box move!
I get about 3dB more just by adding this. For me its a night and day difference.
