I have been involved (just for fun) in a local SPL comp going through one of our local shop here in minnesota. My current system goes as follows: Kenwood Cd deck, JL Audio Evolution VR 5 1/4" components powered by a ppi pc250, 2 10" JL 10W0's in the jl built sealed "powerwedge" box powered by a memphis 16-500D class D monoblock amp running at 4ohms all in a 1995 honda prelude. My problem is that my SPL sucks. Well so does everyone else's up here for that matter. The top score to beat is 132. I got a 125 with this setup. I want to win this in the worst way. I wondering if I just swap out the subs for different ones, (suggestions?) would I be able to top that score changing nothing else. Any help at all would be very nice.

WHICH WAY ARE YOUR SUBS FIRING?
WHAT TYPE OF METER?
WHAT MIC LOCATION?
HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR NOTE YET?
WHAT MUSIC DID YOU PLAY FOR THE 125DB?

ANSWER THESE ?'S AND WE CAN HELP YOU WIN.

WITH THE EQUIPMENT YOU HAVE YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO ATLEAST A 133.

The subs are facing backwards, they use an audiocontrol spl meter with the mic on a stand on the drivers seat at about ear level. I used a Panadisc CD call Bass: Lo and slow with a tone of about 50-60hz. I have not found the right frequency for my car yet because I have no way to see what it does for my spl until I get to the compition. Oh yeh, the score is the highest reading recorded over a 1 min span of time. I really appreciate the help from everyone! Thanks

Well, in all honesty, 2 10w0's is not an *SPL* setup. To achieve 132 out of them would be a stretch, even in a hatchback.

You could try swapping them out for some Punch DVC's to get a 1 ohm mono load for your amp, or just a lower impedance, if you can raise the efficiency of your speakers by 3 db (get more efficient speakers) and then double the power out of your amp, you could (ideally) get a 6db gain. If your amp had any reserves left and doubled power again, assuming your subs had more excursion, you could again add 3db for 9.

If your amp will handle a 1 ohm load, I would suggest taking a look at either more efficient subs with a lower impedance or at LEAST porting the box.

If you could get more efficient subs, lower the impedance to get 4 times the amp power, and port the box, then IN THEORY you could raise your score by 3db+3db+3db+3db = 12db, which would be a 137. That probably would not end up happening, but you could shoot for this as a goal.. If you stopped at 133-135, hey, you still win :-)

Give me a ring if you want to talk more :-)

Well here's my plans. I want to build a wall similar to the one in thumpin's car and scrap my backseat. I want to use either 4 12" punch xlc's or soundstream SPL's. I would also concider using punch dvc's but I don't think I have enuff power for them. Any suggestion's? Any other brand's that I am overlooking in this price and power class? Thanks for all of the help from everyone.

If you are looking for a good 15'' sub at a good price look into Petra Prowlers. Petra recently went out of business so most stores are clearing out their stuff. I bought 4 15's for $350. At a show in Ames I did a 149.6 with those subs on a MMATS baby D. I can't guarentee you would hit the same number unless I built your box, but look into them.

If you do four twelves, you should DEFINATELY be able to hit 132 (I would hope for near 140's, a friend of mine (randy Johnson, team sonic Boom) has 6 xlc 12's in his extended cab and he can do 145) ( lots of power though)

If you can get 200 watts per sub, I would hope for 139.

Port the box though. (Opinion)

Umm i have a question you stated that they are using audiocontroll meters right but which mic are the using? I went to the ***** event at nopi and for sq spl they were using the RTA mic. on the low spl setting and my roomate with 3-12" only did 132. But with the normal audio contoll mic ( the white one) he does 143 consitantly at the dash so maybe this is your problem also well i hope this helps ...good luck

nate: How much did you want for your 10's. My next compitition isn't until next summer so I have all winter to plan and excute a killer system. I want to be able to blow everybody away up here. I think I can do it if I plan everything out perfect.

thumpin- yea i was at both of them. i had the little purple cavalier with hydros. they wern't hooked up at the circut city event though. i compeated with 4 10" rf subs and a 360a2 in the audio king event and hit 137.6. i didn't compeate at the circut city event because i got there too late. i emailed you a while back. i was going to put 24 10" punch in a geo. still got the geo but we ditched the 24 sub idea after reading an artical about team pure sounds rabbit. we plan on 6 15" mtx 7000 and 3 or 6 mtx amps. i get really good deals on mtx (10% above cost).
i finished painting the geo last weekend ppg kawasaki green. we already relocated the gas tank under the hood and cut & lowered the floor where it used to be so we can fit the sub box. the entire inside of the car is striped down except for the steering wheel and shifter. you should come over sometime and we can share ideas. i live a couple of miles outside of st. cloud.

the subs have a 5 year warrenty at audio king where if they ever blow you take them back & they give you new ones on the spot.

Ok you sound like a new comer, and there is nothing wrong with that. You want to beat 132, well get yourself a dual 10 VT box. I promise you 140+ just tune the system right. Yes I support VT, well only prefab I will. You won't eleive you subs in this box.

You could probably do 132 with what you have now if you felt like taking a few minutes to build a peaky bandpass (or a few months )

I say you can keep your 10's and still hit 132. I have 2 10W1's and hit 137 db WITH A 35 HZ TEST TONE. JL probably builds their boxes with sq in mind, not ultimate spl. I would build a sealed or ported box with more airspace to get more movement from the woofer cone. My 10's are in a box with 1.7cu ft per woofer with 2 3"x11" ports. It is in the trunk firing towards the rear with about 1.5 ft between the speakers and the rear trunk. It is powered by an old Punch 45HD mosfet.

Well that sounds like a good idea, however, I am already way overpowering these subs and if I built a bigger box that would lower their power handling even more. I am very dissapointed in these subs from both a SQ and SPL perspective. I really feel that I am going to switch subs. My old 10" Polk Audio db in a .5cuft sealed box could walk all over these sub. And that was with less power. I really liked that sub and am thinking about doing 4 10" of them in a compound isobaric bandpass enclosure. Any thoughts?

I am with the guy before...you can easily do over 132 with that setup in a ported box. I saw a kid in Omaha with a Majestic amp(under $380) do a 137 out of his trunk. If 132 is the highest reading at this show, I would think the mics would be screwed up. At the begining of this season I had 2 10 RF punches in a prefab box do a 136 of a Punch 45. I believe you have plenty in that setup for a 132.
