I know Wayne expressed that somewhere along the way we "lost" the massive spectator and competitor appeal somewhere around 2000 and the following years and extreme class participation has gotten smaller all the time.
Recent threads on the topic have got me looking into what happened and what rule changes occured each year.
I have done a few solid days of going through old rule books, photos, results and called some dealers who once had supported with demo vehicles and had alot of customers who also competed.
My conclusion is changed somewhat. And after Mike@Extreme said we will most likely not get old extreme vehiles back I would tend to agree. Also some said that Oldschool vehicles were not "extreme" by todays standards but were still modified in front of the B piller.
When I read Alma's comment I couldn't agree more. We can still make it work, but I think we need to change our approach to the oldschool class. Rather than try to dumb down Extreme class.
I think we need to think SS Unlimited but a class that allows you to put 1" plexi all around, put reinforced ceiling and doors that simulated factory panels but were SOLID. But not modified to such an extent that theres no room left inside, rather a very Rock solid interior. So alot of current extreme vehicles could drop to this class if they wanted too.
In a sense they will be SS vehicles but with simulated panels that would normaly put them in extreme.
I know alot of SS vehicle may move up to this class but I think that this is part of the natural progression in the class layout and it would closest match what oldschool vehicles that may come back that are currently sitting in a garage or out in a field just waiting to be loaded up for the next show.
So my proposal would be make a SS Unlimited class that allowed reinforcements in front of the b piller. Seats or no seats either ould be fine imo. The rules would be fairly simple to layout and alot of oldschool, new and current vehicles could easily enter this class with very little investment.
I would also like to add, if this were a go then it should be implemented for the 2009 season to give people time to build/convert and test.
Your thoughts Wayne?

so stock door panels, but concrete underneith carpet, but concrete underneith factory dash filled with expanding foam headliner over the top of MDF and still have seats and factory pedals and all new class lets say 1-2" thick. Must be same shape as original ( curved )
if this is what your thinking, I like it

You are correct with the exception that I wouldn't make it a rule to keep any factory panels or some people wouldn't be able to move down to this class. They could be replaced with any material as long as it was similar( in size to the original but made of any material. Because alot of custom vehicles have rebuilt dashes and can't compete because they are tossed in extreme only to get owned.
If we can keep the size of the interior as close to stock as possible then it wouldn't matter what type of enclosure you use behind the b-piller and would allow diversity in designs.

How about factory glass w/ seats. Anything else goes
No I wouldn't want to see windows broken every time it was turned up, and with everything reinforced except the window you will have vehicles breaking windows every time they play it loud. So I would allow like 1" plexi on front and side with maximum allowable viewing area after plexi mounts, etc. Some people don't have the resources to custom curve plexi so I would say allow angle iron window mounts.
It would also let you reinforce the cab alot better. Would also allow older extreme vehicles to return without much modifications.

I too like this idea, could even consider doing it myself! But lemme ask - would this be a burp only class- to be competitive - or would it be geared up like super duty bass racers?
