I was just curious, I noticed at USUC finals that there were some very cool songs playing, never really paid much attention to who was singing/playing but just had a really good range or low's, mid's and highs... what are some good songs, I think I'll download some off (god forbid, the anti-crist website of the world) napster and make a CD and see how crapy my overal system is

Kyle- bear in mind that by downloading music you are limiting the quality of said music, at which point you are putting a stranglehold on your system ANYWAY ? Pick up a couple AutoSound 2000 sounddemo discs.

Acutally, the quality of said mp3 is totally dependant on the sampling rate the said song is riped. For practical puposes, a normal (half-way decent) mp3 is near imppossible for the human ear to distingusih. That being said, I competely agree with SS, since I sure as hell would never use an mp3 in a SQ scenario. :P (I'm just bored. )

I was always told that you can't hear anything under 40hz, and nothing over 18,000 hz that is just what I've been told.

I would like to add...

Styx - Greatest hits

The re-mastered one sounds incredible! I play it all the time because it seems to make my modest system sound sooooo much better !

Rush - Hold your Fire

Another great one... I love the sound of the pile-driver sound on the drums in Force Ten

I love Dave Matthews band and especially their live albums. So if you like them get Live at Red Rocks, Listener Supported, or if you just want two acoustic guitars that sound awesome, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live At Luter College.

Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
7th Son of a 7th Son - Maiden
Iron Man - Live from Live Evil - Black Sabbath (The drum solo "walks" across the sound stage [through your head with headphones])
Hell Awaits - Live from Decade of Aggression - Slayer (Bass drums)

Not your typical SQ picks, but they do bring out the full range, plus DT is just wickedly awesome!!

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing & Sultans of Swing

Brian Ferry - Slave to Love

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax

Glen Fry - All she wants to do is dance

This is somewhat true. Typically in the studio, most <40Hz is rolled off. Exceptions are of course, bass cd's, Tupac cd's, etc. ;p Most of your pop rock type stuff though, is rolled off sub 40Hz, for the mere logistics of it. A lot of the people buying Britney Spears cd's (amazingly there ARE those who buy it...) don't have (4) 15" woofers, and ready to bang someone's windows off. A lot of them are playing it through their boomboxes, and too much of those lower frequencies, would make a cheap system distort and do all kinds of wanky stuff. However, theoretically a perfect ear (which none of us have) would hear 20Hz-20kHz. Though, in its true form, most anything under 35-30Hz, you feel, not hear, what you're hearing is the higher frequencies of that instrument, whatever it may be. As for the 18kHz, that's pretty much true... A perfect ear would hear 20kHz.. but it's more of a sensation than anything as is 20Hz. =)
