i am wondering if mail order kit cars are legal or grey to compete in drag as it is commercialy available to the public as the rules say.

Personally, no.

A friend of mine has a kit.

He purposefully asked the manufacturer to lay up an extra couple of layers of FG to make the better for his install.

It allows way too many posibilities for people to cheat.
