my van runs quite happily at 16v...the joys of an old engine and coil [Smile]

does that make my 12v system my secondary one ?

that depends on what is hooked to it.

Sure you can buy a 3 post kinetik, but 2 big alternator will eventually destroy the battery when you have them running directly to it. We have already figured out how to accomplish this without wasting a battery under the hood, but its a silly rule.

How would charging a 16V battery with a 16V system destroy the battery? Current is demand based. The battery under the hoods 16V would be connected to the alternator and the 12V to stock battery cables.

Thats how mine is and it works great. I have 2-0Ga's from each alternator to the rear and a 0Ga jumper between the two alternators. I have a 4Ga from Alt #1 to the front battery.

I can post pics of how mines done. I dont see how a 12V and a 16V is easier or safer. Keep in mind I have already done it this way. My astro had the stock alt for the truck and I removed the AC for a 2nd alternator at 16V.

I have done it both ways and the way Im doing it now is WAY NICER to intall and operate. This way also allows people to have ONE large alternator run the stereo at 16V and THE TRUCK.

It's not necesary to have 2 seperate alternators or electrical systams. One alternator in the stock location with an adjustable reg can run both the car and the 16V system in the rear.

If thats not easier I dont know what is.

When you already have an alternator its a lot easier than spending money on another battery that costs a lot of money and is going to not do you any good. I understand why this rule is in the book, but I dont understand what the big deal is about a 16v alternator charging 16 batteries, its not like we are trying to kill a 12v or something.

our old extreme van ran the stock alt on a 12v under the hood and had 2 og alts running our 16v set up in the rear. we ran the head unit amp remotes and all off the 16v set up. we never ran the van though cause we lost a few tenths with the alts charging. was like that for years. no one ever said a word.
