I'm planning on adding an Optima Yellow top to my 99 Galant to the factory alt and battery. According to a local shop, they said I didn't have to use an isolator, relay, etc. All I need to do is hook it up parallel. Does that sound like the right way to do it??

you really shouldn't put two different batteries in parallel, but a guy I know put an optima in the back in parallel with the front and didn't have a problem, not sure if it will shorten the life of either battery or not give optimum performance, but it didn't blow up or anything weird like that..

I'd use an isolator in between, it's only another 40 or 50 dollars, and you'll get the most out of your battery. As a bettery ages, it's capacity drops, and it can't reach the same high voltages as before, so when you just wire 2 batteries together, the new one will have extra capacity that won't get used. It'll keep draining into the older battery. Depending on the age of the old battery, there could be a big difference in available voltages.

I would always use either an isolator or big relay when using 2 batteries or more, if you don't remember that the second battery will just be preceived to the first as a load and that isn't a good thing, essecially if the first isn't as strong or in as good of shape as the secondary battery.

You can hook it up in parallel. Look at electric golf carts- they're hooked up in parallel. I've seen plenty of spl vehicles with parallel batteries. An isolator is always nice though.
