I am currently having some problems with my 66 chevy bel-air. It has a new alt and battery but it seems no matter what i do, when i'm driving my radio will continually cut out until i drive for about half an hour when it will remain on. At idle i am getting 16.5 volts (i know this isn't normal) and i can get everything to be ALMOST normal if i drive with my brights, defroster, heater, and windshield wipers on (am guessing the voltage drop from all components brings it to a usable range). Is there a voltage regulator i could buy to fix this problem or do i need a new alt? This is upsetting me alot and any info would help. (BTW i've tryed 4 different head units and amps etc. and the problem still remains.

I am not real familiar with that car, but it does sound like a voltage regulator problem. I would definitely start there. If it's internal you will need to remove the alternator and the regulator in inside it. If it is external, it'll be a little easier on you. At 16.5 volts, are you going through headlights and bulbs rapidly? Hope this little bit of info helps some...

I thought about that too... haven't gone through a single new bulb or fuse the whole time i've had it. I REALLY don't want to have to go to a shop to have them look at it cuz for some reason they charge INSANE prices for electrical systems on older cars. Othat than that i love the car, starts every time, looks great (no rust or even dents) 60k miles and runs beautifully =) Not to mention i got it for a cool $150.
