Is there a general formula out there for determining engine vs alternator rpm or is there too much of a varience from vehicle to vehicle to make any real determination? I know its going to based off of pulley sizes and whatnot but wasn't sure if there is a ballpark answer for this sort of thing. I'm in the market for a big alt for a daily driver car so I'm trying to figure out what's going to be my best bet.

I don't know of any ballpark number i know of but if i remember my math from back in high school it is not that hard. it would be rpm of crank pulley/crank pulley size=x/ alt pulley size. where x is = to the rpm of the alt pulley. can any one verify this it been a while.

that should work. i thought the alternator was typical about 3x as fast as the motor, but i could be wrong

Yeah that should work. How close you think it is to a 3:1 ratio? Thats way easier to ballpark lol.
