Does any body has some ideas how to make bussbars for a battery that has normal SAE posts like an optima?

Thanks

Drill and tap the posts, you can easily tap a 5/16 hole in the top of the post and use a 5/16 bolt.

@danracer

I've tought about that, but I would like to have something with more contact surface

@mechman

Would the lead not be to soft to tap it?

I know that Peter, but the powercells have the posts for a bolt.
I'm looking for something for regular posts (like an optima)

Hi Dieter ,

ever thinked about it how much contactarea there is on a terminal like a Powercell , nsb in mm˛

And the area you have on a SAE terminal when used the "standard" terminals for it

No, I havn't had a problem with the lead being too soft. Obviously, it won't put up with much jerking or abuse, but as long as your bats are secured well (which they should be anyway for safety) you won't have a problem, I have done it before.

If you really want to maximize conatct area, you could machine the tops of the posts perfectly flat with an end-mill. Because the posts are slightly tapered, the shorter you machine the posts, the larger the resulting contact "circle" would be. Most battery posts are slightly domed on top, so you would gain some extra contact by making it a perfectly flat machined surface.

Dont they offer oversized battery terminals for optimas?...you can get these and make bus bars out of copper and the added length to the terminal will have the copper held in place..

I believe that is the D31T optima which has 3/8" stainless steel stud option. I could be wrong but this is what it appears to be.

I do, make a block that moves the connections to the side of the battery in the open space you see in the pic. Kinda have it wrap around from the top to the side.

I ran into the same issue when I custom-fitted my D3100 under the hood of my mazda. The negative termial is very close. It's just the negative, so I'm not too worried. I can also completely remove the battery tray if I really need.
I'll probably do flat copper bar bent over the side of the battery, and just bolt on ring terminals. should be a lot easier than blocks with set-screws.

Build some bars like this.

Then add some ends like this. -

Then your good to go. You would have the best of both worlds. Happy building. [Wink]
