I've gotten a buss bar made up out of copper a while ago but the copper isn't nice and shiny.

I think I read that this would cause a problem and not be as conductive.

Is this true? If so, how should I go about cleaning it? [Confused]

any corrosion or oxidization will add resistance in the line. I use a small wire wheel attached to my cordless drill to clean the copper

there is some stuff that is like a nolock for copper you can use after you clean it up to keep it from oxidizing.

Someone also told me that rubbing vaseline on it will make it keep nice and shiney, never tried it though

It isn't actually oxidized or corroding... it's just dirty and the outside is rough looking. (it's not smooth copper... but more like what you'd probably describe as "rough stock")

Sounds like a wire wheel may be the way to go.

Thanks guys [Wink]

soak muriatic acid for about an hour,
rinse,
dip in diluted nitric acid,
Rinse the copper many times till no acid remains on or in the copper,
Dip copper into solution of copper brite. Any liquid brass/copper cleaner may work,
Spray with clear acrylic lacquer one day after the copper has been cleaned and dried. If the copper tarnishes, redo the process. Weak acids and/or not enough rinsing are the primary problems causing tarnishing.

Man... I wouldn't even know where to get those chemicals [Big Grin]

I think I'll go with sand paper and WD-40... stuff I already have in my garage! [Big Grin]

muriatic acid can be found at any swimming pool store. i know those are probably less common since you're in canada....spending your weekends hanging out with santa claus at the north pole. The muriatic acid is just hydrochloric acid in a 1:2 ratio with water.
nitric acid you might be able to find through a company that deals with dairy farm supplies
