ok im about to do the big 3 in/to my truck.
I undertand where to put my grounds and what not. Well my thing is the inline fuse from the batt to the alt,im gonna do 2 gauge,so if i upgrade i wont have to change it out agian.
Well some people tell me thats is supposda' be the same amonunt of amps as the alt??? so a 140amp inline fuse???? Or what??? someone help me out,its in a 96 Silverader' with a 350(of course).
Pretty much what size inline fuse should i do with a 140 amp alt and 2 gauge wire thanks

The alt has nothing to do with it.. You fuse to protect the wire, nothing else.
I don't know the exact figure offhand, but I saw a chart somewhere once that had the amperage limits of different gauges of wire, depending on their respective lengths..
I would say, 200A...
I'm doing the big three in my GF's Cavalier(105a alt) with 1/0 gauge wire, and a 300A ANL fuse...

soooo if the stock Battery to alt. connection HAS no fuse why SHOULD i put a fuse in between this wire, simply because its larger wire??
I know there will be current/draw,but still there was no fuse in the stock wiring.
Is this an option??? btw this is in a 96 chevy truck....so it was not fused to start with....if i have to ill buy a fuse holder but i would hate to spend that much on a fuse holder

LOL.. I knew I would catch some flack for that..
Your gear is already protected by fuses on the amp, or in my case a 200A breaker(modded 1501d)placed right before the amp..
Do you guys not fuse near the battery on your amp wires? And why would one do that? To protect the wire from catching on fire.. A fire none-the-less, that could wipe out your entire engine compartment, or at least toast some of your stock wiring in the area..
I fuse to protect everything.. Most cars i've played with have fusible links in the alt-to-battery wire..
Call me crazy, but I figure the alt deals with alot of current, enough to warrant a $20-40 piece of insurance at least.. Hell, maybe i'm totally wrong.. LOL
Hopefully someone with some technical background in this area will pop in.. I just can't say for definate(while giving credible info/links etc..)

Your supposed to fuse everything that comes off the battery, near the battery, hence the fuse between the battery and the alternator.(there to protect the alt. *Use a fuse of the same or larger amp output of alt*) That way when your battery shorts out and throws a huge power surge throughout your entire vehicle until a fuse stops it. The surge will fry everything near the wire before the fuse.

uhm, alternator wires are fused, most newer cars have fusible links, follow the wire completely back, when you get to the pregnant part, that is the link

no link at all...just staright up batt-----wire----alt,no fuse or anything.
Vechile has an ECU but it is not linked to the alt.....is it possilbe only some cars need fuse(s) to the alt because of the ECU or other type(s) of "computer"
