hello.
i have a whine that comes from my speakers only when my stereo is on. the whine changes pitch as the rpm's of my engine increase. i have an old 82 el camino, and have all new stinger wire for my stereo. i didn't change the wires from the alt to the battery though.
the car had the same whine back before i bought a 135 amp hi-amp alt from www.4alterstart.com . before, i had a puny 60 amp stock alt. wheni replaced the alt, the whine almost completely went away, but just recently i have this mysterious whine again.
now i think that the problem is either my alternator or my grounding. each of my 2 amps has its own grounding point...the ground wire is 4 guage and only about 6 inches long. then i have another ground for my stinger 3 farad capacitor.
i have read several different opinions on the subject of ground loops, including an article in popular science.
i am not still not sure if i am getting a ground loop, causing the whine, or if it is originating from the alternator .
any help from someone with firsthand experience is appreciated.

oh yeah i forgot to put : my electrical guage on my capacitor maintains a healthy 13.5 or so volts consistently even when i am just idling. in case anyone was wondering if i got voltage drop.

this is commonly called "alternator whine." first off, try grounding your amps in the same spot and make sure the ground is clean and free of crud or paint. if thats not possible, jump a piece of the same wire you use to ground them from one spot to the other. then try grounding your battery to the chassis with a nice thick hunk of good wire. and then, try grounding the alt or alt bracket to the chassis with the same wire.
