I already have 0 gauge all around and have a 160 amp alternator. I was wondering how many batteries I need? and would one stinger sp1700 battery be enough? if not how many optimas?

your gonna want to get a 16 volt load on that amp to get its potential out. i would say 4 8 volts or 2 16 volt batts will do nicely. you already have the HO alt, you should get a adjustable regulator and a dual voltage battery upfront 12/16 and a 16 volt setup in back, then turn your regulator up to 17.9 volts. you will love the results!!!

thats what the volume button is for man, you want the voltage to be up there, so if it gets too loud just turn the volume knob.

HCCAfan,

OK, I am not very good with charging systems. So, i am wondering just how you are supposed to get a 12volt daily driven ride with extra batteries up to 16 volts when playing the stereo. Also taking into account that you would want to listen to the stereo while driving, not just in a parking lot.
BTW,
I am an HCCA Fan too

turbostart makes a dual voltage battery, i believe 12 volt side posts and 16 volt top posts. the battery itself is spendy tho, in the upwards of 185 i believe. your car would be hooked up to the side posts, and the alt and the back batteries(16 volt setup) would be hooked up to the top posts. so everything your car needs for 12 volt are hooked up to the side and your amp and alt is hooked up to the top posts. and yes, you could daily drive or park this setup!
hope that helps!

SO, your alternator still charges the 12 volt side even though it isn't hooked up to it? Where can you get them at? and why would I need more than one? I am not gonna be playing the stereo with my engine off.

Also, why isn't everyone doing this if it is so great? Is it new or is it risky?

cuz most people either use the 16 volts to compete or dont know anything about voltage issues with amps. you have to remember that over 90% of the street boomers out there thro in the box they got at the local shop with the amp and just beat down the street. as for charging, it actually charges the 16 volt side which downgrades to the 12 volt inside the battery, but yes it does charge both. why would you want a couple more 8 volts in back? better reserve, trust me on this. a cap wont fix the heavy dimming you will be getting. as for people using them, yes, there are a few. just ask around. you will have to ask around locally for turbo start batteries at the local stereo shops. if you cant find them locally, ask the board and someone in your area should be able to direct you to the nearest location.
