I have read the yellow tops have a lower esr than regular batterys is this true. Will it help keep my voltage up any or and thing else to be gain while the car is running?

i have found that the optima red tops consume much less power to stay fully charged (when vehicle running) im not sure about yellow tops but i assume they are similiar... less consumed power leaves more power for stereo

I would also like to know if there is a real gain from going from a wal mart to a yellow top. I am leaning towards the walmart (this is for under the hood).

How many, and what amps will you be using?

The Wal-mart (Yellow) batteries are real nice,when they first came out they were only like $62 a piece.
