Sorry for the dumb question on my part, but I forgot how to go about charging a 1 farad capacitor before using in car audio setup. Could you please let me know how to do this? Thanks,

use a simple 12 volt light bulb (1157 works fine) wire the bulb in series with the capacitor, and hook up a 12 volt battery source. (one bulp lead goes to battery positive, one bulb lead goes to capacitor positive, then negative of capacitor goes to battery negative) the light will luminate when the cap is sucking in power. when the light goes out, the cap is done charging. then you can install in car without huge sparks.

have you done the "cap-lick" test yet? its a real crowd pleaser, im telling you, the fireworks are intense! and there is no after-taste! (for a reason.....) Posts: 1854 | From: freezing in FAIRBANKS ALASKA | Registered: Aug 2000

I have a question about how you said to charge the cap what kinda wire should i be using for this, and as a 12v source, could i use my car battery? also, no ground wires have to touch the light bulb right,

yes of course you can use the car battery
the light bulb is hooked up in a very unconventional way.. you can use any size wire, as there is very little current going thru.. i use 16 guage i think soldered to my 1157 bulb. just pretend the bulb is not there and use the wire as you would to hook up an amp for instance. positive battery to positive capacitor terminal. negative battery to negative capacitor terminal. (the bulb just limits the amount of power the cap will absorb, so there are no large sparks. and its a good indictation of when the cap is done charging (light goes out))

the light bulb takes the place of the resistor.
you can use a resistor just fine also, but it is hard to know when it is done charging...
