i have 200amp ohio gen alt. w/adj voltage regulator, which would be best 6 12 volt batteries with alt. adjusted to 16volt output? or 6volt, 8 volt run series, with alt. output at 16volts? on 4 us amps 2000x. thanks, jonathan

Depends on the 12V batteries dude. Optima's will die at 16V, while some batteries love it. The problem with the 16V way (well, 14V really) is you have to be at least 2 volts over battery voltage with the alternator for them to charge. So if your batteries rest at 14.9 (which they will) then you need 16.9V to charge them.
Some amps won't like that.

2 volts over float, no I dont think so, maybe an old wives tale. 1 volt is fine , but a bigger difference will put the alt under load quicker when you burp your system. Just to charge, half a volt difference is fine, especially with a stable adjustable regulator.

if you want your batteries to take 5 years to charge maybe 1/2volt.
but if you understood how an alternator works, you know it won't produce current until around 2 v over nominal. It needs that much to overcome the batteries internal resistence.
