I notice that most deep cycle batteries just have the top posts on them. My question is, since my car's factory battery cables are made to fit on the side of a battery, would it be okay to cut them, solder them or join them somehow(+'s & -'s still separated though), and make them fit the top posts?

shure u can. just cut and strip the wires and put them into the top post terminal.
