My alternator has an out board regulator. For db drag, is the best place to have the voltage sensing wire, the amplifier + connection? I am thinking that this will be the place of highest voltage difference, and such drive the alternator harder (when the system is cranked)

highest should be at the alternator righafter tha regulator because wiring has resistence on it (very low) its not really gonna effect it but if u put it ont eh battery that would be the next best place because the battery is jsut stating that ur alternator is charging at 14.7 volts(whatever it is, thats mine) when the car is on.
