hey,

so i just put a RF bd1000a1 (1000 x 1 into 2ohm) in my '86 Olds Calais. the amp has 4awg power and ground, the battery also has a 4awg ground to the chassis. RF recommends a 100 amp fuse for the amp, but i only have a 40A fuse inline right now.

the weird part is i have a brand new 100amp alt (it's a 6cyl model) and my lights dim like crazy! now, if im not blowing the 40A fuse, then you'd think my electrical system could easily handle 40A or less current draw with only no accesories on except for the headlights - but it can't.

now, my batt has been drained a couple times (like when my alt died a while ago) so could this be the problem? or do you think the alt can't keep up with the bass (it really dims on tight bass, i have 2 10W6 in a sealed box, they are very tight) and then if this is the problem, a cap should fix it right?

thanks!

ive had problems with my larger alt as well. it isnt putting out the voltage that its supposed to, i have a new regulator on the way, you might want to check that. also, i would replace that batt. it probably isnt absolutly nessissary, but if its the stock-non deep cycle it isnt designed to be drained and then recharged, so it could be damaged.

as for the fuse, you need to put a 100 amp in there. have you turned it way up yet?? it surely seems like a 40 amp fuse would have blown.

about you old alt., what size was it?? if that amp has a fuse rating of 100 amps, that means it will probably draw 40-50 amps, maybe a little less, constantly at a normal listening level. that only leaves 50-60 amps for you car and other amps to run on, that isnt a whole lot. you might need another alt, but only if it continues to give you trouble. try adding a 1 or 1.5 farad cap before you get another alt.

maybe that helped a little.

First off all don't waste your money on a cap. I have stated the reasons why over and over again. And if you wish to see them in more detail check out the FAQ on my web page. Now I would take your battery to a reputable local alt/batt shop and ask to have it load tested on thier AVR. While you are there have them test the alt also. If you suspect the battery hurry and get this done bad batteries are the #1 cause of burnt up alternators. If the problem pursists post again.
