We have a 1986 Ford Escort, with a 134 amp upgraded alternator. How would you go about adding a second one, and running them together. Each has it's own regulator, internal, and out put wires. How would you get them to put out together, and read voltage together. We had dual alternators on it before, and just tied everything in together, but kept burning up one, or the other. Thanks.

have you checked into alts. that are externally regulated? if you know how to do it you could build your own regulator for the alts. even make it so that you could adjust voltages from inside your vehicle. i know that there are some competition CB amp builders that do offer these types of regulators. http://www.geocities.com/nonamecb/antreg.html here is one site that offers a external variable regulator that can be used with any externally regulated alt.(be carefull with these things, you can cause damage to electrical systems if not careful)

This is something I have done quite a few times actually, and while using a common regulator for both alts is the best way to do it. It can be done using separate internal regulators. This usually involves testing a few hundred regulators to find two that are as close to the same as possible. You must also be sure both alternators are spinning at the same RPM, if one is driving off a different size pully than the other they will not be the same. They both must sense voltage from the same source also and the sense wires should be about the same length. If you are looking for a very heavy duty regulator capable of running them both at once, and is continuously adjustable from 12-20Volts drop me an e-mail.
