If I used a stock alternator on 16 volt batteries?

They would charge to 13.8 volts and that's it, right. would I lose anything...?

This is what I am thinking....if I have a stock alternator I could charge them to 13.8 volts. And when I draw more than the alternator can produce it will start sucking juice from them....right? but they would be better because they would be at 13.8 volts instead of 12.5....???

any opinions?

your 16 volt batteries will rest at about 16 volts... your alternator can do 14.4 volts. your car's engine, car's electrical, your stereo, it will all be running on the 16 volt batteries until they lose thier power and drop down to 14.4 volts (from the alternator). so you will be continuously running your 16 volt batteries at about 14 volts, (and no higher) which will ultimately destroy your batteries. it would be like running a normal 12.6 volt battery at 10.6 volts all the time... NOT GOOD.

now when the alternator is completely overtaxed, it might be bennificial to have those 16 volt batteries to run off of.. but thats only if the 16 volt batteries havent been ruined by then.. who knows what kind of power they would have then..

i dont know what kind of effect running a 14 volt alternator on a 16 volt battery will have on your alternator.. hopefully the diodes are up for the chore..

so all in all.. its not a good idea.

this is all IMO...

Very bad idea. Whats going to happen is that if the 16 volt batteries are fully charged, the first time you start your car, current is going to go backwards through your alternator, since the potential at the battery is higher than the potential at the alternator. This will kill your alternator in a matter of seconds. Smoke/possible flames will result. If you want to charge 16 volt batteries, you need an alternator capable of doing 17+ volts.
