I think my alternator is crapping on me...

I have a standard 12 volt system with a OG alternator and a typical battery.

My alternator started making a wierd humming sound and all of a sudden I am running almost 16 volts running, and 13 when at rest.

I think it's time for a new alternator BUT.......Am I going to ruin any thing by using the car WITH this problem, for the rest of the week?

Your regulator died on you. Expect your alternator to go out very very soon. As far as your vehicle taking that voltage, It should be ok, since it seems to be working right now? It does depend on your vehicle though to a certain extent.

If your driving a 1975 Ford Tbird that has the starter and coil working off the alternator and nothing else... then yeah, your car could probably take 20 volts

If your driving a 2002 Lexus with a zillion little electrical gizmos, you might want to think about getting it fixed sooner than later.
