The benefits are no noise can enter the cable in Toslink. Most every Toslink cable is used as a digital connection so noise isn't that much of an issue anyway. The downside is that they must be used with equipment that has a digital output/input with Toslink connectors.

BS. That's what they want you to think. Even if you have your components stacked on top of each other you need about a 25-foot run to avoid the inherent problems. Go coaxial!!
