The other day I had my stereo cranked to impress one of my friends when suddenly I stopped hearing high frequencies on the right (doh!). Anyway, I blew my Image Dynamics NX30 1" tweeter and I'm trying to find out why it happened. The amp is a cadence A1 two channel. The ID component set is 2 ohm so they see 150 watts per side. The HU was an Alpine CDA-7839, the volume was on 30 out of 35. The gains on the amp were set fairly conservatively by me. Do you think the amp somehow sent a clipped or distorted signal to the tweeter? The tweeter I have left has been making funny noises lately, it distorts with the volume only about half way up. I turned the gains to about half to compensate for this problem so I don't blow that one too....

Any ideas what could be wrong?

also the my speakers make a funny noise when I turn off my car, like the amp is dumping all it's power or something...sounds like a giant zipper.

They should not be seeing anything that low. They are running off the passive crossovers that came with the component set. I assume they are crossed over somewhere near 3khz.

I'd start trouleshooting with the tweeter/crossover/wiring first. Take that tweeter out and hook it up to a small amp (even a boombox with detachable speakers would have just enough power) and see if it works. Do the same with the tweeter connected to the x-over. Then, hook the mid-bass driver up to the amp (in the car) without the x-over, then the tweeter (volume not up and bass down [internal x-over on hp]) to the amp without the passive x-over. Do the same with both sides, also try it with a different run of speaker cables.

Also, check to make sure that your RCA connections are solid and the cables aren't frayed. If you have a multimeter or a friend with one, hook up the HU's RCA outputs to the mm and make sure that you have a signal coming out, same with the amp.

In other words, widdle everything down to the lowest commond denomenator. That should help narrow down the problem areas, and the guys/gals here will have a better idea of where to focus their troubleshooting capabilities and solutions.

Thanks uncle Ber. I started by trying to make sure the source unit wasn't the problem. So I hooked my amp up to a home reciever....still distortion. The RCA connectors look fine. I also tried playing all the speakers seperately off the amp w/o the crossover like you said. Still sounds crappy. Only thing I really haven't tried is replacing the speaker wire because that involves removing door panels and unsoldering stuff.

Right now I'm pointing my finger at the amp.....lately it has also been making a strange noise when I turn the car off, like a giant loud zipper. Seems like the amp isn't truning off right, and it dumps all its stored power through the speakers or something.

Hrm....bad amp, it happens. Is it still under warranty? If so, take it back to the store and see if you can't get it fixed or exchanged. Also, if they want/need to test it before they can do any warranty service to it, that will help clear up any fuzziness in the problems with it. btw, how old is the amp?

If it was Net bought or mail-order, I'm not quite sure what the procedure is for warranty service on that. A lot of retailers around me won't touch Net-purchases.

Unfortunately the amp is a 4 month old net-purchase which has already been repaired by cadence twice. Guess I'll just send it back again, even though when I called them they tried to say I had a bad ground. Yeah right. The ground is right there, 1 foot away from the amp, it's a common ground, I scraped all the paint off, blah blah blah.
