This has probably been asked before, but how did you guys get your start in audio and car audio?
Me: Dad had a Marantz Receiver and TEAC tape deck with EV equalizer/tape - source switch and UA turn-table along with 2 EV home speakers. The EVs got replaced by Infinity Reference Series 3-way 8" towers. The TEAC deck got replaced by an Onkyo and an Onkyo cd-player was added. The turn-table finally died - maybe to be reborn.
Then, I got my first stereo - a Fisher system with 2 10" towers. It was good and solid for my first system, lasted most of the way through college - what abuse!!
While in college I got into stage audio and lighting - what a treat that was!! 24,000 + watts at my disposal in a 1,000 seat auditorium.....oh the memories. Cackle, My Scharona on the House PA system during a lighting hang.....cackle.
All the while, I began to think....well if I can put this stuff together on stage and in my room(s), why can't I put it into my truck. And, so I tried to fit whatever went BOOM into my little s-10, Bronco-II, and the new beastial s-10.
I've always found it fun to work on my stuff, but truly enjoyed helping others with their systems. I almost started down a career path in audio. Almost. But, had I done that, wouldn't have met my wife...funny how fate works .
Ok, my ex-brother-in-law got me started (damn him!). When I started dating my ex, we went out to his house, and listened to his system. Damn that thing was loud (keep in mind this was in '88). He had an H/K preamp, and a couple of NAD's, then he had AA mains, and Polk Monitor 7's. Holy cow, I thought that was the shiznit! So, that's how I got started in it....

One day my older brother came home and he had bought a majestic amp and some mtx truck boxes, you know with the mid and tweet in the box with the woofer. I remember he was going throught the install manual and he looks at me and asked,"You think we can put it in?" I look at the amp and said, "no" Well once he got it back from the shop, we disected it and said "oh, we could have done that." what ever
Been hooked ever since.

Well, i had heard friends systems that they had in their car and liked the way that the sound vibrated your nuts. I didnt know what made it do that. That was like in 7th grade. near the end of my 7th grade year a classmate of mine had a Crutchfield mag and i thought it was so cool. I ordered one for me and memorized it cover to cover. Thats where i learned some of the basic terminology. I began to play with the cdplayer i had in my room and hooked up as many speakers in my room as i could. (probably a .0235 ohm load, huh?) Meanwhile i got on the internet and started reading everything i could get my hands on from box theory to damping factors. Well, my mom worked with a lady who's husband owned a stereo shop and i got hooked up with a job. That was in my junior year. I started out building boxes and helping out on installs. Soon, due to my knowledge i went to sales and am happy to be there. Im a senior now just about to graduate and have been working there for over a year. One thing that bugs me is the way some people treat a young salesman. I probably dont look a day over 16,(but oh so good looking!) so people assume that i dont know anything etc. It kinda sucks. I think i want to go to college and study Electronic Engineering and then who knows? Maybe own my own store, or design amps or something. Well, thats my life story. Sorry to bore you guys!

I bought a neighbors used 85 mazda b2000.. Truck had a 10 $ stereo (no joke, 4$ curitis deck and 4$ speakers w/ 2$ of radioshack wire ) and I needed to do SOMETHING... So I took a few scrap pieces of pine and used a hand-saw (IE no power) and made it into a 6x9 box... Cut the hole with a chisel!
It worked, but I just needed... More.
And, voila, hooked.

In college (1989) my roomate had a set of Infinity RS 6000's. I got hooked and bought a set of Infinity Kappa 9's (5 ft tall) and two Carver TFM 25's (700W Each) to power them. Amazing what $3500 worth of home stereo sounds like...
Car Audio:
Added a Sony RF changer (one of the first ones) to my Cutlass Supreme. Then the factory speakers and head sounded bad, so I replaced them with a Sony changer controller unit and MB Quart components and a Soundstream Class A 100...

My brother and I grew up around NHRA. We built a 1970 El Camino while I was in High School. The car had really loud exhaust. I use to take the truck out for weekend street racing. One day, I got tired of not being able to hear the radio while driving to the races. I screwed a sheet of wood behind the seat and I "custom fit" (hahaha)as many 6x9 spark-o-matic speakers as I could get on the board. I used a small (underdash) power booster to get the volume of the speakers to an acceptable level. When I went to the street races, everyone liked the "tunes' that came from my ride. from that day on, I have been "hooked" into this monster called MOBILE AUDIO. Good Luck and God Bless.

I got a 95 galant and I really didn't care much about the stereo. But then the tape deck didn't work..then the radio...so I broke down and bought a pioneer deck. Then the factor 6x9's blew and sounded horrible and so I looked into buying new ones and bought some four ways and have been an addict ever since!

Me and a very significant girlfriend..went our seperate ways.... Circumstances weren't right ..and POW... I went out and spent $2500 dollars on a home stereo to soothe my soul! Yamaha RX-v992 and Polk Audio RT1000's ... On a college student income mind you...
well one and half year's later...another important girlfriend...another tortured heart (circumstances suck)...and POW $1500 dollars for a car stereo system..purchased over three or four months...
I figured if i find a girlfriend soon..I'll have the center channel and dvd player by the end of summer... And If I'm really lucky...I'll break off an engagement and something...and go out and buy a BIG screen tv!!!!
For record, I'm still VERY good friends with the ex's ... no cheating or lying.. just didn't work out.. sucks sometimes..
Damn I NEED a hug now!!

I'm sure that like many of you guys out there, my start in car audio was through a friend. We went into P.C. Richard and Sons(big electronic store in the NY/NJ area) to look at systems for his car. Sure enough, the next day I came back with my father to buy a pair of ALpine BASS 200 10s. Little did I know what I was getting into. I was fifteen and I didn't know my a$$ from my elbow when it came to stereophonics. Four months later, after saving countless A&P paychecks I bought an AudioArt 200x2 amp, put the Alpines in a Jensen bandpass box and the rest is history. Man was I cool.
